IP protection level (Ingress Protection, IP for short) is a standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to evaluate the protection of the device housing against solid foreign objects (such as dust, tools, fingers) and liquids (such as water, moisture) 12. The IP protection level consists of two numbers, the first number indicates the dust protection level, and the second number indicates the waterproof level.
Dust protection level: It is represented by numbers from 0 to 6, 0 means no dust protection, and 6 means complete protection against foreign objects and dust intrusion. For example, IP6X means complete protection against foreign objects and dust intrusion.
Waterproof level: It is represented by numbers from 0 to 8, 0 means no waterproof protection, and 8 means that the device can be immersed in water for a long time under a certain water pressure 12.
1. Difference in waterproof performance
IP65: Protected against low-pressure water spray, suitable for daily rain and spraying scenes.
IP66: Protected against strong water spray, can withstand high-pressure water gun washing or heavy rain impact.
2. Applicable environment
IP65 is suitable for ordinary outdoor environments (such as under the eaves, non-strong wind and rain areas).
IP66 is suitable for more stringent scenes (such as ship decks, industrial high-pressure cleaning areas).
3. Cost and design
IP66 has higher sealing requirements, usually more complex structure, and slightly higher cost than IP65.
The dustproof level of the two is the same (completely dustproof), the main difference is the waterproof strength, you can choose according to the water pressure requirements of the actual environment.
1. Clarify the installation environment
Indoor/sheltered environment: IP21/IP5 is sufficient to prevent minor dust and dripping water.
General outdoor: IP65 is recommended. It should be dust-proof and resistant to rain spray.
Harsh outdoor conditions: Preferred IP66/IP67, resistant to high-pressure water spray, sand and dust, or short-term immersion.
2. Pay attention to the differences in waterproofing requirements
IP65: Suitable for daily rainwater and watering (such as household photovoltaic systems).
IP66: Resistant to high-pressure water jet impact (such as in coastal typhoon areas and industrial scenarios that require regular flushing).
3. Balance cost and protection
The higher the protection level, the more complex the sealing design, and the corresponding increase in heat dissipation difficulty and cost.
In non-extreme scenarios, IP65/IP66 can already meet most demands, avoiding excessive investment.
IP65/IP66 covers most household and commercial scenarios. In extreme environments, the protection level is further upgraded. At the same time, a comprehensive decision is made based on heat dissipation, cost, and long-term maintenance requirements.
